NCAA Basketball

Tips for betting on March Madness, as well as filling out your NCAA basketball Brackets... Making it to the Final Four.

March Madness Tip #1

Every year March Madness comes, and everyone is filling out their NCAA basketball brackets, yes even my mom does. Mom doesn't do to bad every year. She always seems to have a few teams in the final four, but she can never seem to win. After talking to Mom, we figured out her problem is that she tries to pick too many upsets in the earlier stages. Too many in fact that by the end out the second round, even though she still has some very strong teams in the race, she is clearly out of the money.

So what did we learn from Mom? Trying to pick too many upsets can kill your hopes of winning your bracket. This might seem like a no brainer, but year after year decent handicappers are killed in the first and second rounds attempting to pick the right upsets when there really is no need. As our chart demonstrates below, the higher ranked teams consistently win more games in the first round.

This chart leaves all of the team analysis out of your bracket and shows you results based upon the initial seedings. As you can see, in the first round the higher ranked teams tendto win much more (and they should). In fact, in the last 20 years, a number 16 seed has never knocked off a number 1. As the seeding decrease, so does the win percentage, but even in the 8 seed vs. 9 seed match ups, the 8 seeds hold a slight advantage.

NCAA first round records for the last 20 years:

 Seed

 Record

 1 vs. 16

80-0

 2 vs. 15

76-4

 3 vs. 14

 67-13

 4 vs. 13

 64-16

 5 vs. 12

 54-26

 6 vs. 11

 56-24

 7 vs. 10

 48-32

8 vs. 9

 43-37

March Madness Tip #2

  Bet the No. 10 seeds:

No. 10 seeds aren't supposed to beat the No. 7s, but since seeding began in 1979, at least one No. 10 has beaten a No. 7 every season except for 1993 and 1985. Wait it gets better, at least two No. 10 seeds have beaten No. 7s in nine of the last 11 seasons. In 1999, the No. 10s had a clean sweep.

Bet the No. 10 on the money line and get the odds. If at least two of these 10 seeded teams wins, you will be ahead.
