The third and final leg of the Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, which takes place June 6 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. Coverage starts at 5 p.m. ET, post time is 6:30 p.m. ET and you can watch the race on ABC. It is an American Grade 1 stakes race.
Belmont is known at the ?Test of the Champion? and is widely known and accepted as the most demanding leg of the Triple Crown races. It is conducted on the first Saturday that is on or after June 5. The race is also the longest of the Triple Crowns at 1.5 miles. With the race of that length, it promises drama and excitement, just like we saw last year with Big Brown being passed by a 38:1 longshot.
First run in 1867 at the Jerome Park Race Course in New York, the Belmont initially was run at 1 and 5/8 miles. As with the other two legs of the Triple Crown, the length of the Belmont has changed throughout history. It has been run at a mile and five furlongs, a mile and a quarter, a mile and a furlong, a mile and three furlongs, and the current distance of a mile and a half, which was set in 1926.
A few historical notes and milestones: Famed legend Secretariat won the Belmont in 1973 and set a world record for the race at 2:24. This also is the all-time record for a mile and a half race on dirt that still stands today. Secretariat also holds the record for margin of victory, set in the same race at 31 lengths, the largest margin in the history of Grade 1 races. There have been nine foreign-born winners, the latest being Victory Gallop in 1998.
Since 2000, the Belmont winners have been Commendable, Point Given, Sarava, Empire Maker, Birdstone, Afleet Alex, Jazil, Rags to Riches and Da'Tara in 2008.
Qualifying age is 3 years old. The purse for the race is $1M.
The top contenders in the 2009 Belmont Stakes are Old Fashioned, Friesan Fire, Pioneer of the Nile, I Want Revenge and The Pamplemousse, much like in the other two legs of the Triple Crown.
The race is known as the ?Run for the Carnations? since a blanket of white carnation flowers is thrown over the winner's neck.
