Money Management
How NOT to lose at sports betting
What is a Unit?
Units are a predetermined amount of money that someone decides on as a part of a money management system. Most long term sports betters use units. These units can be an arbitrary amount like $10 or $100. So when someone says that are betting 2 units, it's like they are saying that they are betting $20 or $200 or $2,000.
Units can also be a percentage of someone's bankroll (say 2%). So if their bankroll is $1000, 1 unit is $20. So, if they are betting 2 units, that would be a $40 bet.
Personally, I use 1 unit as a percentage of my sports betting bankroll adjusted monthly or weekly depending on the sport. I have different percentages for a football unit than a baseball unit, and I never bet to win more than 1 unit.
The Best Basic Strategy
Every bet is for the same amount, to win one unit.
A unit is determined to be approximately 5% of your wagering bankroll.
Unit sizes are calculated on the 15th and 30th of every month. The unit size is calculated by dividing your working bankroll by 20 and then rounding down to the nearest dollar. The new calculated unit is used throughout the end of the period before a new unit size is created.
Advanced Play
The above strategy is for the novice/new sports bettor. This strategy attempts to give the player enough action to keep it interesting while not busting out. If the player is a constant winner, he will slowly build his roll and increase his unit size.
The more advanced sports bettor will not normally bet 5% of his bankroll on one play. Instead, in an interest to protect his rather large sum of cash, he will usually use1% or 2% units.
